The Pettiford Family

Archibald /Archilus Pettiford, born about 1781, was a five-year-old bound to Nicholas Talley by the Granville County court on 9 November 1786 to be a cordwainer [Minutes 1786-7]. He was called Cillis Pettiford in November 1795 when the Granville County court reported that Talley had moved to Guilford with the boy several years previous, but had since died and left him with someone who was not treating him well [Minutes 1792-5, 287]. Archibald Pettiford was head of a Stokes County household of 6 "other free" in 1810 [NC:606], 11 "free colored" in 1820 [NC:364] and a 72-year-old "Mulatto" listed with $400 worth of real estate in the 1850 census for Forsyth County with Milly (35), Rebecca (27), Martha Peddiford (25) and Sarah Norton, a 90-year-old white woman who was born in Virginia. He died before September term 1860 of the Forsyth County court when Thomas Sullivan was appointed administrator of his estate. In December 1862 Sullivan sued Archibald's heirs to force the sale of his land to pay the estate's debts. [1]

Polly, born about 1818, married James Tiner, on 23 June 1849, Forsyth County bond. A 32-year-old "Mulatto" listed with James Tiner in the 1850 census for Forsyth County.

Emily "Millie", born about 1815, was the Milly Peddiford in Archibald's household in 1850. She married Ransom Bass and was deceased by 1862 when her unnamed daughter was listed as one of the heirs of Archibald Pettiford.

Martha, born about 1825 She was the Martha Peddiford in Archibald's household in 1850, wife of Warner Bass who was head of a Granville County household of 1 "free colored" in 1840. Martha Pettiford lived in Forsyth, North Carolina in 1850 (Age: 25). She lived in Broadbay, Forsyth, North Carolina in 1860 (Age: 51). Warner Bass lived in Broadbay, Forsyth, North Carolina in 1860 (Age: 50).

Rebecca Pettiford was born about 1823 in North Carolina, and she lived in Forsyth, North Carolina in 1850 (Age: 27). She married Ambrose Williams on 16 Mar 1854 in Forsyth, North Carolina.

Alfred M. Pettiford was born in 1804 in Stokes, North Carolina. Alfred was head of a Stokes County household of 3 "free colored" in 1830, and 6 in Guilford County in 1840, in Guilford, North Carolina. He married (1) Temperance Griffin on 08 Jul 1847, in Owen County, Indiana. She was born in 1801. Alfred and Tempy are found in the 1860 census for Montcalm County, Michigan. After Tempy's death, Alfred settled in Vigo County, Indiana, where he married (2) Elizabeth Roland on 13 Dec 1867 in Vigo County, Indiana. She was born on 02 Jun 1816, in North Carolina. Alfred died in Feb 1868 in Terre Haute, Indiana, and is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery.
Alfred M. Pettiford and Temperance Griffin had the following children: Garrison, Myranda A, Colrinda J, Archibald, Betsy, Calvin G, Lucetta, Aurilla, and Emeline while living in Owen County, Indiana.

Isaac Pettiford, was born about 1805, in North Carolina. He married 1st, Mary Ann Mitchell Larter, daughter of Arthur Larter and Mary E Mitchell, on 09 Feb 1846 in Surry, North Carolina. The 1850 census for the Pilot District of Surry County, North Carolina, lists him as a 45-year-old "Mulatto" farmer with wife Mary Petaford and children. She was born on 18 Feb 1828 in Virginia. She died on 07 Mar 1872 in Vigo County, Indiana, and is buried in the Roberts Cemetery. Mary Ann's tombstone includes the initial "M" to signify that she was a Mitchell, at the time when daughter Rebecca was born. He married 2nd, his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Roland, the widow of Alfred Pettiford, on 29 Sep 1872 in Vigo County, Indiana. She was born on 02 Jun 1816 in North Carolina. He died on 10 Dec 1873 in Vigo County, Indiana, and is buried in the Roberts Cemetery. Elizabeth died on 01 Apr 1893 in Vigo County, Indiana.

Rebecca Jane Pettiford was born on 09 Jan 1843 in North Carolina. She married 1st, George Herman Malone, son of Samuel Malone and Emily Strayhorn, on 04 Dec 1866 in Vigo County, Indiana. He was born about 1832 in North Carolina. He died in 1871 in Lost Creek, Vigo County, Indiana. She married 2nd, Joseph Batton, son of Wiley Batton and Anna Russell, on 12 Feb 1874 in Vigo County, Indiana. He was born on 10 Dec 1852 in Indiana. He died on 16 Feb 1930 in Terre Haute,Indiana (Age: 77), and was buried in the Stewart Lawn Cemetery. She died on 15 Dec 1943 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Rebecca was born about 3 years before Isaac Pettiford and Mary Mitchell Larter were married. DNA evidense tends to support the theory that Rebecca was not the daughter of Isaac, but was instead a Mitchell. (more)

Polly Ann Pettiford was born on 20 Jul 1849 in North Carolina. She lived in Pilot, Surry, North Carolina in 1850 (Age: 1). She lived in Lost Creek, Vigo County,Indiana in 1860 (Age: 11). She died on 01 Aug 1868 in Vigo County, Indiana, and was buried in Aug 1868 in the Roberts Cemetery.

Sarah Elizabeth Pettiford was born on 02 Mar 1855 in Indiana. She married Malachi C. Anderson, son of Jeremiah Joseph Anderson and Rhoda Underwood, on 14 Oct 1872 in Vigo County, Indiana. Arthur Pettiford
