Origin and Migrations of Haplogroup J2b1a
This maternal line stems from a branch of J called J2b1a. J2b1a is a primarily European haplogroup that traces back to a woman who lived approximately 7,500 years ago. The Neolithic Revolution was gradually sweeping across Europe from its roots in the Middle East, where the people of the Fertile Crescent had domesticated plants and transitioned to a more settled lifestyle. This new agricultural technology was carried by waves of farmers migrating to the west, including the ancestors of J2b1a. As Europeans populations boomed, the descendants of J2b1a spread all the way to the western edge of the continent.
Today, members of the J2b1a haplogroup are found at low levels almost exclusively within Europe, especially in the coastal regions along the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean in countries such as Italy and Spain.
